The City Gate Building consists of the two units – the former bank and the theatre at present named Mestské divadlo P. O. Hviezdoslava. The history hints and radical period intentions recovery - this is what the new City Gate Building is really like. It is the symbol of the vibrant metropolis, fulfilling also the most demanding requirements of its future owners and tenants.

history and nowadays

Eugen Kramár and Štefan Lukačovič, architects, designed the functionalist building which has been connecting and co-creating the appearance of one of the best known Bratislava squares since the 1940s. Originally, the building was built for Slovenská národná banka, later on Všeobecná úverová banka resided in it for all the time. It had undergone considerable alteration of construction during the rebuilding led by Panák and Kusý. They managed to approach the object in a correct way and respectfully. They got back to the original design and returned the business areas to the parterre. The modified upper floors turned to flats represent a big change. Architects Cakov and Makara designed its indoor decoration. They left the building envelope untouched; by purpose they even did not clean it thoroughly. The Swedish granite on its parterre gantries and pillars where the new shop windows are bordered, are conserved. The original Janko Alexy‘s window-panes, reworked details, stone dressing and the admirable spiral staircase, unobtrusively combined with the modern architectural elements, give the building its unique luxury tone.
